Overview

Program Overview

Back-end engineering involves developing and maintaining server-side logic, databases, and systems that power web and mobile applications. This programme covers TypeScript, Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, Git, and deployment, equipping you to build, secure, and ship production APIs and server-side applications.

Over three months, you’ll progress from writing TypeScript functions to deploying complete back-end applications with authentication, database operations, and API endpoints. Each module is project-driven, and you’ll have a portfolio of deployed server-side projects by the end of the cohort.

Nigerian back-end developers are sought after in various industries, including fintech, banking, e-commerce, telecom, and health tech. Companies like Flutterwave, Paystack, Moniepoint, Kuda Bank, Interswitch, and Andela hire back-end engineers year-round. Node.js is popular for fintech platforms handling large daily transactions. Remote work allows Nigerian developers to collaborate with international companies at competitive rates through platforms like Toptal, Turing, and Gigson.

In the US, mid-level Node.js back-end developers earn $95,000 to $125,000 annually, while senior engineers earn $130,000 to $165,000. In Nigeria, junior back-end developers earn ₦1,800,000 to ₦4,200,000 annually, mid-level engineers earn ₦4,200,000 to ₦9,600,000, and senior engineers at top-tier companies earn ₦8,400,000 to ₦18,000,000 or more. TypeScript fluency is essential for senior Node.js roles, and engineers with experience in microservices, authentication systems, and payment integrations earn an additional 15 to 25% premium.

In three months, you’ll go from no back-end experience to building and deploying production APIs. You’ll write your first TypeScript line, create your first API, connect it to a database, add authentication, and deploy it live. By graduation, you’ll have the server-side skills and deployed portfolio that employers and clients seek in back-end developers.

Audience

Who This Program Is For

This beginner-friendly program caters to front-end developers, university students, graduates, career changers, and entrepreneurs interested in learning back-end skills.

The cohort schedule offers three weekly two-hour sessions with assignments, making it ideal for working professionals. Freelancers will gain the ability to build and deploy APIs independently for clients.

Skills

Tools & Core Competencies

Graduates will learn to build RESTful APIs with Express.js and Node.js, design and query MongoDB databases with Mongoose, implement authentication with JWT and sessions, handle file uploads and third-party integrations, manage code with Git and GitHub, and deploy production applications to cloud hosting platforms.

Curriculum

Syllabus & Course Modules

Six sequential modules over three months cover language basics, server frameworks, database operations, and production deployment. Projects accompany each module.

Type-safe JavaScript for the server. You will learn TypeScript syntax, types, interfaces, generics, and how to set up a TypeScript project for Node.js development.

Server-side JavaScript runtime. You will learn Node.js architecture, the event loop, file system operations, package management, and request/response handling.

NoSQL database fundamentals. You will learn data modeling, schema design, CRUD operations, and how to connect Node.js to MongoDB using the Mongoose ODM.

The core of the program. You will build full RESTful APIs with routing, middleware, authentication (JWT and sessions), file uploads, mailing services, cron jobs, and third-party integrations.

Professional version control. From your first commit through branching, merging, conflict resolution, and team collaboration workflows.

Taking applications live. You will learn environment configuration, hosting options, database security, logging, monitoring, and production best practices.
